A serious public-interest website must work for the person on a fast connection, the reader conserving data, and the visitor returning from a phone with an interrupted signal.
Access is part of the argument
A project about citizenship and public responsibility cannot treat access as a decorative feature. The website must serve readers in Sierra Leone, members of the diaspora, educators, journalists, book clubs, institutions, and people encountering the framework for the first time. Those readers do not share one device, bandwidth level, schedule, or reason for visiting.
The design therefore starts with readable text, ordinary links, keyboard access, responsive layouts, and public resources that do not require an account. Audio and video are additions to the record, not replacements for it.
Low data without a second-class experience
Low-data design does not mean stripped-down thinking. The public introductions, Insights, transcripts, chapter markers, source notes, and practical tools should remain useful before a visitor chooses to load media. The site delays third-party playback until the visitor deliberately requests it.
Offline access and installable app behavior are also treated as optional conveniences. A reader can prepare selected public pages for unreliable connectivity without creating an account, transmitting a reading history, or putting protected manuscript material into an offline pack.
Private activity should remain private
Several reading tools can remember a place, note, preference, or journey on the current device. The site explains that boundary instead of presenting local browser storage as a publisher account. A visitor can clear the information, print it, or avoid the feature entirely.
Private Early Reader access follows a different standard. Assigned manuscript chapters, feedback, invitations, and entitlements remain outside the public website and its offline system. Public convenience must never become an accidental path into protected material.
A website that tells the truth about readiness
The site openly distinguishes what is available now from what remains planned. The book is in prepublication. Commerce is not active. Podcast and video pages keep transcripts and production information readable while unapproved media stays unplayable. Newsletter requests prepare an email rather than pretending an automated subscription has occurred.
These boundaries may feel cautious, but they are part of trust. A presentable website should not look more complete than the underlying service. The reader should always know what happened, what did not happen, and what requires another deliberate step.
